We are helping to bridge the food poverty gap

This summer we have helped to reduce the poverty gap in Exeter through funding for holiday hunger activities.
Food Exeter

We are a member of Food Exeter; this is an independent multisector partnership, which is working towards sustainable and healthy food for all in Exeter and has representation on the Food Poverty and Fair Access to Food Foundation. This summer we have helped to reduce the poverty gap in Exeter through funding for holiday hunger activities. We are working in partnership with St Sidwell’s Cafe, Exeter Foodbank, The Beacon Centre, and Wonford Community Learning Centre to help feed families most in need.

One in four children now lives in poverty in the UK, meaning three million are at risk of going hungry over the summer holidays. Without the support of free school meals, holiday periods often intensify poverty among low-income families.

The average cost of childcare during school holidays has more than doubled to £124 per week, which places added stress on family finances and wellbeing. With this in mind, we have stepped up to the plate to help address food inequality.

Our funding has ensured families have been able to enjoy social, fun and free activities throughout the summer holidays as well as the opportunity to enjoy a nutritious meal. LiveWest colleagues have helped to support this campaign as well through volunteering to prepare meals and support activity sessions.

In Cranbrook, Exeter, St Sidwell’s Café were leaders in running their summer cookery school, where families visited local farms, harvested their own vegetables, and used these ingredients to cook a meal together.

LiveWest funded activity sessions, which took place in three locations around the city, where families enjoyed free social activities and a meal during the day. Weekly sessions have taken place at Cranbrook Education Campus, Wonford Community, and Learning Centre and The Beacon Centre.
