Staying safe in your garden

Whether you’re gardening or just enjoying being outside, it’s important to stay safe.

Gardens and outdoor spaces are a great place to spend time, especially in warmer weather. Whether you’re gardening or just enjoying being outside, it’s important to stay safe. There are a few simple things you can do to reduce the risk of accidents.

Garden safely

When gardening, always take care when using tools and equipment.

  • Wear the right clothing, such as gloves, sturdy shoes and long trousers.
  • Be careful when using tools like lawnmowers and hedge trimmers.
  • Do not use electrical equipment in the rain.
  • Always unplug tools before changing cords or clearing blockages.
  • Use a Residual Current Device (RCD) to help protect against electric shocks.

Taking these steps can help keep gardening safe and enjoyable.

Prevent slips, trips and falls

Slips and trips are common in gardens, but many can be avoided.

  • Store tools away safely when not in use
  • Keep hosepipes out of walking areas
  • Make paths, steps and patios less slippery where possible
  • Keep outdoor surfaces clear of algae and debris

If you use a ladder, make sure it is secure, on level ground, and the rungs are clean. Use the correct height ladder so you are not over‑stretching.

Know what to do when you need help

It's always a good idea to let someone know if you're out in the garden just in case you have an accident, and you should always try and keep a phone close by.

If you have an accident, first try and get some help from someone close by. If it's an emergency, call 999.
