Stay safe while enjoying summer barbecues

Embrace the summer sun, responsibly
BBQ safety

Barbecues are a popular part of the British summer, but they can be dangerous if safety precautions are ignored. Fires, burns and carbon monoxide poisoning are all potential risks, so it is important to barbecue responsibly.

Choose a safe spot

Never use a barbecue indoors or on a balcony, as this can cause dangerous fires and smoke build-up. Always place barbecues on level ground and keep them away from sheds, fences, trees and anything flammable.

If using a barbecue in a public space, follow local rules and only use designated areas.

Stay in control

Never leave a barbecue unattended. Keep children, pets and games away from the cooking area, and always have water or sand nearby in case of emergency.

Use fuel safely

If using a disposable barbecue, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and remove all packaging before lighting.

Only use enough charcoal to cover the base and light it with approved fire lighters or starter fuel. Never use petrol, paraffin or biofuel, as these can cause dangerous flare-ups.

Cook and dispose safely

After cooking, allow the barbecue to cool completely before attempting to move or clean it. Hot ashes can remain dangerous for many hours.

For safe disposal:

  • Empty cold ashes onto bare garden soil.
  • Never place ashes into wheelie bins or dustbins.
  • Ensure disposable barbecues are fully extinguished before throwing away.

By preparing carefully, supervising responsibly and disposing of materials safely, you can enjoy outdoor cooking while helping to protect your family, friends and community.
