Sid boosted community atmosphere through community event

13-year-old boosted community atmosphere by working with us and Plymouth City Council.

The efforts of one of our young residents to boost the community spirit of his estate in Plymouth has paid off after helping to organise an activity day.

Sidney Burgess worked with us and Plymouth City Council’s Youth team to bring people together for a fun-filled day at Foxfield Close.

The 13-year-old’s drive to boost the community atmosphere led him to work with Plymouth City Council to generate funds alongside our efforts to coordinate the activities. More than 100 people attended the event.

Burgess reflected on the main reason behind his idea, he said: “I wanted to do something positive in the community and bring people together so I thought I would do something about it.”

“I wasn’t expecting there to be so many people. It’s great to see everyone getting involved and enjoying themselves.”

“I would happily do another one like this because it’s great to see, especially with the face painting, football and BBQ here too."

In partnership with the Plymouth City Council, the event included football with Plymouth Argle Community Trust (PL Kicks), Plymouth Parkour, scrap modelling, a coffee van, a BBQ and much more to give the public more of a chance to get to know their neighbours.

We also included a Waste Amnesty Day designed to help our residents recycle their unwanted items, reduce their carbon footprint and spread the message to create greener futures together

Some of these unwanted items included old mattresses, rugs, microwaves, sofas and even televisions.

Working alongside a local scrap store, we encouraged children and parents to creatively reuse ideas they would normally recycle and create pirate ships, monsters, and cars.

With everybody laughing and taking the opportunity to have a chat, local resident Shirley Hall, also praised the success of the day for her and her family.

She said: “Everybody knows everybody, but it is in quick passing where we say hi but for all of us to get together, it’s really nice.

“It has been a really good community atmosphere here and I reckon we should do it more often.”
With a local man on the music and a call out for more burgers to be bought from the local shop, the day gave an opportunity to residents to talk to their housing officers.

Lorna Turnbull, our Community Connector for the area, was very pleased with how the event turned out and the number of smiling faces.

She said: “This community feel is just phenomenal. Everybody is just so friendly and to be able to come together and do this for the community, it’s great.”

“It was fantastic to work alongside Sid and Plymouth City Council. I’m so happy so many people came out and joined us here today.

“I think we have got a really strong environmental message at LiveWest. It is something we really believe in, and I think this event reflects that.”

LiveWest continue to make progress on our journey to be Net Zero by 2050, reduce the carbon footprint of our homes and vocalise the importance of Creating Greener Futures Together.
