Help keep your community clean

Get involved to keep your community cleaner and greener during the Great British Spring Clean.

Every spring, communities across the country come together for the Great British Spring Clean – a nationwide effort organised by Keep Britain Tidy to tackle litter and protect the where we live.

Anyone can take part by pledging to collect bags of litter in their community. Whether you join a community group, organise a small clean-up with friends, or simply spend half an hour picking up litter on your daily walk, every contribution makes a difference.

Keeping your environment tidy can also benefit your wellbeing, helping to create a calmer, more pleasant space and giving people a greater sense of pride in the places they live.

But keeping our communities clean doesn’t have to be limited to a single event. There are simple things we can all do throughout the year that make a big impact.

1. Pick up after yourself

One of the easiest ways to help, is by taking responsibility for your own waste. If public bins are full, take your rubbish home and dispose of it properly. Small items like cigarette butts, food wrappers and drink containers can quickly build up, so making sure they go in the bin helps keep streets and green spaces tidy.

2. Recycle as much as possible

Recycling correctly helps reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Rinse food containers, flatten cardboard boxes and follow your local council’s recycling guidance. Small actions at home can make a big difference to how much waste is successfully recycled.

3. Dispose of bulky waste responsibly

Large items such as furniture, mattresses and electrical appliances should never be left on the street or fly-tipped. Most councils offer bulky waste collection services or have recycling centres where these items can be taken.

By combining community efforts like the Great British Spring Clean with everyday habits, we can all play a part in keeping our communities cleaner and greener.
