Christina thrilled with her new home in rural South Brent

As we continue to celebrate Rural Housing Week, we spoke to one of our residents who talked about the importance of affordable rural housing.
South Brent

Christina Shaw is delighted to remain living in the village she has grown to love thanks to a new development at South Brent.

Christina moved into her new rental home after work to complete 40 new affordable homes in the village was completed.

Having lived in South Brent for the last 10 years, Christina was keen to find a new home that would meet her family’s needs.

With spiralling private rental prices making it less affordable to secure a home, Christina discovered a new development being developed by LiveWest, and leading partnership business, Vistry Partnerships.

A successful application process culminated in Christina being offered one of the new affordable rent homes and she is thrilled to have moved in with her partner and two children – Rosie, 14 and James, 11.

Christina, 50, said: “I absolutely love the new home I have been given by LiveWest.

“I love the fact that we can stay living in the village we have been in for 10 years.

“It gives us the security to know we are here for the long term.

“We are so happy with the house, it is beautifully constructed and it gives us ideal space and comfort.

“We love the community and people are so friendly around here. There is a real community spirit and people go out their way to look out for others.

“My daughter is pleased with the new home as it gives her some personal space and we couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Set within the Palstone area on the East side of South Brent, the new homes benefit from a location on the South West fringes of Dartmoor National Park with good access to local amenities and the A38.

The development is made up of 25 homes for affordable rent and 15 for shared ownership and has provided a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom accommodation.

The development benefited from grant funding from LiveWest’s strategic partnership with Homes England, the government’s housing and regeneration agency.

Christina added: “LiveWest made the process very easy for me and were there to support me every step of the way.

“It is lovely to know you have got the support from your housing association, they have been great with us.

“Affordable housing is really important, especially given the relatively low wages in Devon.

“Lots of people don’t want to move away from the area they have lived in for a big chunk of their lives. So to provide housing that is affordable and suits the needs of local people is brilliant.”
