Every month we share green advice, supporting our vision of Creating Greener Futures Together. This month, we are looking at caring for wildlife in the cold weather.

When winter arrives, it can be tough for wildlife. The cold weather makes it harder for animals to find food, water, and shelter. But with a little effort, we can all do something to help them through the chilly months. Here are some simple and fun ways to look after wildlife this winter.

1. Feed the Birds

Winter means less food for birds, but you can help! Putting out bird feeders filled with seeds, nuts, and fat balls gives birds the energy they need. Even scraps like bread or leftover fruit can make a big difference. Just remember to keep the feeders clean to stop germs from spreading.

2. Provide Fresh Water

When it’s freezing, ponds and puddles can turn to ice, leaving birds and animals thirsty. You can help by putting out a shallow bowl of fresh water. Check it daily and break any ice that forms.

3. Make Cosy Homes

Animals like hedgehogs, frogs, and insects need somewhere warm to stay. You can leave a pile of dry leaves in your garden or make a small woodpile for creatures to snuggle in. Bird boxes or even an upturned flowerpot with straw can also make great shelters.

4. Don’t Forget the Bees

Some bees hibernate in winter, but they still need safe spots to rest. A simple bug hotel or leaving patches of your garden wild can help insects survive the season.

5. Be Careful with Salt and Chemicals

While grit and salt keep our paths safe from ice, they can harm wildlife. Try to use eco-friendly alternatives if possible, and keep pets away from salted areas.

6. Check Before You Light a Fire

If you have a garden bonfire, always check for wildlife like hedgehogs before lighting it. A pile of wood might seem like the perfect shelter to them!

7. Plant for the Future

Winter is a great time to think about planting shrubs and trees that provide food and shelter for wildlife all year round. Things like holly, ivy, and hawthorn are great choices.

Why It Matters

Looking after wildlife helps keep nature healthy and balanced. Plus, it’s fun to watch birds, squirrels, and other creatures enjoying the spaces we share. By working together, we can make sure wildlife stays safe and strong, even in the coldest months.

Do Your Bit Today

Looking after wildlife doesn’t take much effort, but it makes a big difference. Even small changes can help keep animals safe and happy all winter long.
