Adapting to the changes in our climate

From heavier rainfall and flooding to hotter summers and increased energy demands, the effects of climate change are already shaping the way we live, work, and build homes.

At LiveWest, we know that climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time. At LiveWest we are committed to creating greener futures together, which includes supporting our communities to adapt and thrive in a changing climate.

Building resilience in our homes and communities

We are working hard to make sure our homes are not just affordable but also sustainable and resilient.
This means:

  • Energy-efficient design: We're investing £40 million to help move all of our existing homes to an EPC rating of C and above by 2028.
  • Future-proofing against extreme weather: Looking after our residents' drainage and ventilation systems to help residents cope with hotter, wetter, and stormier conditions.
  • Sustainable neighbourhoods: Creating green spaces, planting trees, and supporting biodiversity so our communities benefit from cleaner air, shade, and protection from flooding

How you can help

We believe that adapting to climate change is a shared responsibility. Small changes at home and in daily life can make a big difference.

Here are some practical ways you can help build climate resilience:

  • Save energy where you can: Simple steps like switching off lights, unplugging devices, and choosing energy-efficient appliances not only cut bills but also reduce carbon emissions.

  • Use water wisely: Collecting rainwater, fixing leaks, and using water-efficient fixtures helps protect this vital resource, especially as hotter summers increase demand.

  • Stay cool sustainably: Keep blinds closed during the hottest part of the day, use natural ventilation in the evenings, and consider planting shade-providing greenery outside your home.
  • Support biodiversity: Create wildlife-friendly gardens with native plants, bird feeders, and insect-friendly spaces to strengthen local ecosystems.
  • Travel greener: Walk, cycle, car-share, or use public transport where possible. Reducing car use cuts emissions and improves local air quality.
  • Be prepared for extreme weather: Sign up for weather alerts, make an emergency plan, and keep an eye out for neighbours during heatwaves or storms.

Creating greener futures together

Adapting to climate change is not just about responding to today’s challenges but also preparing for tomorrow.
